Pets??????

What are so small pets that I could get that are easy to care for and don't smell?(My mom is concerned about that last part)

Well, all the fairly small rodents are decent, such as hamsters, gerbils, and rats. They won't smell depending on the bedding you use as well. If you use odor control it won't smell, for I am using it now and my hamster doesn't bother anyone in the house. Of course if you get close enough it will smell, but don't get too picky. They don't need too much money spent on them. Just a cage, chew toys, treats, and bedding. Of course food and water are needed as well. Hope this helps!

Hints From Heloise: A new day for hints

NO SOAP?

Dear Heloise: I conclude from your column about washing vegetables and fruit. Why does the Subsistence and Drug Administration recommend against using soap to coating vegetables and fruit? If properly rinsed afterward, why is this a poser? -- Dave, via e-mail

Great question, Dave! It can be confusing, primarily since people use the term “wash” the veggies. The FDA, the Cooperative States Department of Agriculture and other respected sources say to “tub” fruits and vegetables vigorously under cool, fully running water ONLY, while rubbing with your hands.

DO NOT wash with detergent or whiten solutions, because fruits and veggies may absorb the “washing” explication. Detergents and bleach are NOT intended for human consumption, and they could peradventure make you sick. There have been numerous tests showing that direction water and scrubbing with a vegetable brush does the job. -- Heloise

Introducing AnnArbor.com's Lost & Found Pets feature - AnnArbor.com

Let me fill you in on how this works. At the beginning of each week, we will post a current Lost & Found report featuring some animals from the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV).

If you e-mail me with information about a pet you've lost or found - and a photo if you wish, we'll post it here in the weekly entry. We'll also provide updates during the week about owners and their pets who are reunited.

You'll also want to check with HSHV. If you live in Washtenaw County, your lost pet will be taken there. HSHV offers many ways to make sure you are reunited with a lost pet. They offer the following suggestions:

Call HSHV at (734) 661-3545 to file a lost or found report. Post a photo and contact information about your lost or found pet at www.hshv.org . Visit the HSHV and look for your pet at least every other day.

Remember, by state law, a stray pet is held a minimum of 4 days - 7 days if the pet has a collar or microchip/tag. After the hold period, the animal is evaluated for adoption. HSHV attempts to place animals with adoption potential that are too young or need rehabilitation in the foster care program.

There is no time limit or expiration date on adoptable animals at HSHV. An animal may remain there as long as it is healthy, temperamentally sound and there is room for it in the shelter or foster home program.

Here are some of the lost and found pets currently at the HSHV:

Found near Dexter-Ann Arbor and Pratt Roads. Golden Retriever and a small black dog (some type of terrier). We are keeping the dogs at our house; please call and be able to describe the dogs and their collars. Contact information .

Suzy Sherman is a news producer for AnnArbor.com and oversees the Pets section. When she isn't working, she is hanging out with her 5 cats, a dog and a bird - all rescue animals. You can reach her at (734) 623-2536 or via e-mail at suzysherman@annarbor.com .
