Helping save pandas in China
Since 1987, the hub has rescued, released and bred hundreds of rare specific animals, although the pandas are the focus.
Each volunteer is assigned a panda to profession with. I have San San, the only male of the eight pandas at the centre during my stay. Like many of the pandas, he was rescued from the delirious, wounded and in need of care.
The tip of San San's nose is torn, quite from fighting other pandas. Another, Niu Niu, came to the centre missing her front left-hand paw.
As a volunteer, I do frequent spurts of small jobs. The leading feeding times are 10am and 4pm, when the pandas get their treats. Milk licence, egg and vitamins are mixed with hot water.
Niu Niu loves her milk; she squeaks while it is being advance then slurps it noisily. They also receive a large chunk of panda piece a mixture of oatmeal and water with added fish or crux bones. Pandas find it delicious and some of them lick the floor until every molecule is gone.
The pandas have individual outside areas with trees and bushes but we get San San to climb the enclose bars for exercise, using thick carrots as a reward. He has severe, white claws and heavy paws, and arms that I observation can easily stretch through the cage bars.
