What does a giant bird eating spider really look like?

My cousin is in the army and they are based in Afghanistan and one of the guys who stays in the tent with him was bitten by a giant bird eating spider and is now in Intensive Care, but I'm not sure what it really looks like or why its so harmful.
There are lots and lots of legends about spiders. This one sounds like a combination of the legends about Goliath Birdeating Tarantulas, and the Camel Spiders that our boys overseas run into in Iraq.
Many times these legends go as far as saying "A friend of a friend was bitten and died". However, when a name is asked for to check the facts and verify, they usually back down.
Goliath birdeater tarantulas (Theraphosa blondi) do not live in afghanistan. They live in South American tropics. Their bites are not dangerous, but they are known to be temperamental and have hairs they can kick off that can cause intense itching for days. They are reported to prey on birds (hence the name), but they really don't. They might eat one if they manage to get their fangs on one, but being a terrestrial spider that isn't very likely.

Camel spiders are not even spiders. They are arachnids along with the spiders, ticks, and scorpions called Solifugates. While they have very powerful jaws for their size, they have no venom. Bites from these guys have been known to happen, and usually results in decent scars that can get infected, but don't require "intensive care". There are many, many ridiculous stories and myths about this arachnid that seems to have gotten started with a famous and deceptive photo. Here is snope's discussion about the photo:

Some restaurant employees eulogize once a year with a special dinner. Recently, the staff at Bistro Bordeaux in Evanston certainly got theirs. However, the actuality was a much more unusual morale-boost than most.
Owner Pascal Berthoumieux and 17 employees jammed up a bunch of tents and headed to Lake Mills, Wis. for a late summer camping voyage at Sandhill Station State Campground.
“We had talked about prosperous out to dinner somewhere,” Berthoumieux said. “But I’m not your ordinary restaurant owner.”
S’more luxury
And his fireside menu, which included glammed up versions of in keeping all-American camp food, was completely different from anything that is ever on the menu at Bistro Bordeaux. Sleek chocolate spread and rich, buttery sable cookies trumped graham crackers and draw off chocolate bars in the s’mores they made for dessert. Slivered almonds added surface. Berthoumieux even gave his s’mores a special smooch: He spiked the toasted marshmallows with inexperienced raspberries.
