Is it bad to feed ducks Black oil Sunflower seeds?

There are several Muscovy Ducks that have taken up residence along a canal I live on. I always read that its bad to feed ducks bread since there is no nutrutional value, which I don't. Is sunflowers seeds ok, or they just as harmful? Ive searched numerous Petco's and Petsupermarket and none of them ever have duck food?

It's actually bad to feed them anything. What you read about bread is true. However, even feeding wild ducks healthy food is something you should not do.

Feeding wild ducks makes them far too keen on humans, which can result in malicious people harming or killing them. It also will cause them to forgo looking for other types of food and harming them nutritionally. They may not migrate if there is a readily available food source and will become dependent on you to feed them!

As for your question, seeds are not something that you should feed ducks due to choking hazards. Things like Romaine lettuce & tomatoes are better. Chopped up hard boiled eggs with the shells on are good, too. Basically fruits and veggies.

Does feeding black oil sunflower seeds really help a horse's coat?

I've been doing some research on things to help a horse's coat color, and to make it shinier, and many people have said BOSS work. Are there any harmful side affects? And how much should you feed?

We've fed BOSS to horses on and off through the years, and with the proper nutrition in place first, yes it can help. We don't feed them anymore due to cost going up, and knowing of a horse that has had them implicated in an impaction colic -- not sure if the BOSS was really the reason for the colic, but I prefer not to take the chance.

Get into Nature: Sunflower seed prices skyrocket

Back in June, I went to a neighbourhood feed store to buy a 50-pound bag of black oil sunflower seed. I was shocked when the banknotes register rang up $35. I paid as little at $11.99 for the same bag a year ago, though I mainly pay between $15 and $20 for 50 pounds of black oil.

I wanted to sympathize the significant price increase, so I made some calls. I got several explanations, but none from anyone speaking on the recount.

Obviously, gas and diesel prices have risen steadily the last few years, so transportation costs by denounce and truck are up.

One source suggested that a wet spring delayed planting of this year's crop. The amount that matures by net time depends on fall weather, so market uncertainly is a particular.

Another factor is that less sunflower acreage may have been planted this year. Wheat, millet, corn or soybeans may have been a raise bet.

Finally, one brave source suggested that farmers may be manipulating the bazaar. Sunflower seed can be stored in silos for two years or more. As long as it stays dry, it does not degrade. Farmers may have been holding back seed since last fall to drive the guerdon up. That's the bad news.

Q: Why is black oil sunflower the most recommended seed for backyard bird feeders? Name withheld by request.

A: Black oil sunflower is a preferred seed for the largest number of feeder birds.

The shell is relatively thin and even small-beaked birds can easily crack it open.

The kernel inside is larger in relation to the shell than the kernel of other common feeder seeds, offering more reward for every seed opened. That kernel also is loaded with nutrients, more than the other feeder seed types, including the all-important protein.

There's also a high level of oil and fat in black oil sunflower seeds, which gives birds eating the kernels an energy boost.
