Losing out to those who flout egg laws
FARMERS in the North East are trade on the government to ban the imports of eggs from foreign firms who put down new European welfare laws.
From January 1 next year all battery hens, which still give around half the number eaten in the UK, must be kept in larger cages with a den, a perch, something to peck and scratch and access to food.
But with less than four months to go North East producers horror that their millions of pounds of investment will be undermined by lax standards and modification in continental countries, including Spain.
Chairman of the Jingoistic Farmers Union (NFU) North East regional poultry panel, Keith Henderson, who supplies hens to the egg farms, said he hoped he would not see a retell of what happened to Britain’s pig industry.
“When they improved profit standards, the banned equipment was just bought by Dutch and Danish producers who then acclimated to it to rear pigs more cheaply,” he said. “They then sold the pork back to Britain and gouge out this country’s producers who were abiding by the law. The problem is that economics is economics and when a housewife goes into a supermarket what she says she’s wealthy to buy, on welfare grounds, and what she actually walks out with are often different because of her budget.”
