Wood stove pellets for my kittens, which kind?
I had just bought "TIDY TIMBERS all natural wood pellets" for wood stove pellets, you know. I'm using it as kitten litter. it is working good, but I have a huge concern. After reading a post about some wood pellets having a bad oil in them (?) I am scared now! It seems I cant get anything right with cat litter!
Does anyone know of the brand? It says its made from wood fibers (but they dont say what kind of wood) and its premium so its less than 1% ash. It says on the packaging that its not for human or animal consumption... but my cats ren't eating it, they are peeing in it! Anyone know this brand? It was the only kind I could find, found it at a Home Depot. please let me know! I really want a safe, low cost kitten litter (SAFE) and I need some help!
I wont buy the clumping because of the bad stories, and the clay (which I had them on first) is so dusty and expensive.
Actually that's not true about wood stove pellets having a "bad oil" in them. The process is which the pellets are prepared removes the oil. If anyone's saying this it's most likely Feline Pine - the company who puts wood stove pellets in a bag with a cat's face on it and charges EIGHT TIMES what wood stove pellets cost!
What you're using is perfectly safe. Wood stove pellets make EXCELLENT litter - I'll never use anything else. And since they're all natural it's the perfect litter to use with mouthy kittens who often try to eat the litter. It only says "not for human or animal consumption" as obviously eating a LOT of wood would never be good for anyone unless you're a termite!
Wood stove pellets neutralize the urine odor and the moisture is absorbed into the pellets. As they get wet they break down into sawdust. If you dump the pan when the pellets are about 50% broken down the pan dumps out completely dry.
If you want to save even more money look for a farm/feed store in your area. They tend to sell them as cheap as $3.50 for a 40 lb bag. And unlike Home Depot and Lowes they have them year round since people use them in horse stalls.
edit: "none of the stories of clumping litter being harmful are true"? I used to work in a vet office and we've seen NUMEROUS kittens come in that SUFFOCATED after eating clumping litter since it turned into cement in their throats and sinuses. I wonder how many kittens you'll kill with your BS comments? PLEASE DON'T BELIEVE THIS PERSON, PEOPLE, Kittens should NEVER have clumping litter. Here's an article from a breeder that nearly lost an entire litter - http://thelighthouseonline.com/articles/ clump.html
