Do you think he has an issue with color? - BirdBoard.Com - Parrot ...
So Mango eats a dry mix from Bird Paradise that has all sorts of food in it. Nuts, dried fruits, dried veggies, etc. So after he's been eating this since October, I have figured what he eats out of it and what he throws or leaves. So today when I was filling his dish, I decided to take out all the stuff he doesn't eat and only leave things he likes. Well, when I was done, I looked at the bowl and it was all pretty colorless. White coconut, brown nuts, some white dried fruit, apple slices, sweet potato slices and banana chips. The things I took out were papaya, raisins, cranberries and peas. Is it a coincidence or does he only like food that has no color? He eats the zupreem natural pellets so they are also colorless. I am almost tempted to go out and buy some colored pellets to see how he reacts. Perhaps, but I think its really just a matter of what he likes. I think that like people, some birds just like general foods where as other birds will eat nearly anything put in front of them. I would be curious to see how he reacts if you go out and get some colored food. Knowing birds though, he would have tried the food before discarding it and it is quite possible he just doesnt like the taste of them. I do think parrots use colour to determine what they will and will not eat to some degree. I use Tropican pellets that have three colours - greeny, yellowy and orangy (all natural colours). Tropican tells me that the forumlation is the same for each pellet - but the natural additives that give them their slight tinges of colour are different. The taste *should* be the same. As far as fresh foods I am not sure about color. I have a mash for him that he eats that kind of turned brown when it all got mixed together. When he eats Bird Appetit it's also mostly brown, with some orange carrots thrown in, which he will nibble. I don't, maybe it is just taste preference but it was so funny when I looked in the bowl and saw all the blahness.
