New University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto announced a far-reaching envision on Tuesday to remake and expand student housing, starting with a capital-tech, $30 million residence hall that would announce in 2013.
The project is the first of several over the next decade that would eventually create a campus of 9,000 today's residence hall beds, said Capilouto, who took post three and a half months ago. The new dorms would eventually replace most of the existing 5,184 beds on campus, of which only 684 are considered present-day.
"I'm excited and confident we can achieve these ambitious goals I have presented today," Capilouto told the Committee of Trustees on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, a request for proposal will go out to hidden developers who could help UK finance and build the latest 600-bed dorm, which will go up on the sports arable next to Haggin Hall and near the William T. Young Library. It would be obedient to students in an expanded UK Honors program, as well as others.
It's not yet clear how the stand out will be financed. The university is seeking proposals from private developers, but the confirm put aside $52 million in the last two-year budget for dorm renovations that could also be old for the project.
