Animal Spirits Drive Asia's Booming Pet Industry

Multinational companies have large salivated over the sheer number of Asian households and their preference for goods and services. Based on daily spending levels of $2-20, the Asian Occurrence Bank reckons that 1.9 billion Asians, or 56% of the folk , could be considered in 2008 as middle class. In 1990, only 21% of Asians belonged to that caravan site. So the absolute numbers are growing, along with the proportion of middle savoir vivre spenders. No wonder marketing executives scour the territory to understand consumer habits. But they might also want to look at who else is at well-informed in: An army of pampered pets with equally expensive tastes.

Add in Australia and New Zealand, where pets outnumber humans, and Asia’s aggregate pet denizens now exceeds 488 million, according to Euromonitor. That’s an hellacious lot of dog food, cat litter, vaccines and flea baths. As people come of age wealthier, and couples have fewer children, pets be biased to become more popular. Cultural habits do persist. Muslims in Indonesia shrink from dogs as unclean (cats are fine). Yet even in China, where dogs were once demonized as a working-class affliction, pet ownership is rising fast with 6.6% of households owning a dog. The biggest bazaar in Asia is Japan, where pet food, grooming and veterinary anxiety are estimated to be worth $18 billion in 2009. By match, Euromonitor values the U.S. pet market at an eye-watering $48.3 billion.

Gaithersburg, Md.  – Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling with offices in Gaithersburg and Frederick, Md. recently responded to a fire loss on December 8 at the Jaber residence, 13311 Woodruff Ct. in Germantown, MD. According to Tom Plant, Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling office owner, the two story home was completely destroyed after an accidental fire. The home is owned by Lila Jaber who is a single parent of an 11 year old boy and a 23 year old daughter. Jaber’s daughter has three young children who also live in the home.

“In addition to the devastation of the complete fire loss, Lila also lost two pets in the fire including a dog that perished and a cat that was missing,” said Plant. “We learned that the local fire department wrapped the deceased dog in a blanket and placed it on the curb. However, our associate Bobby Burch removed the pet dog and took it home to his house and then returned the next day to bury the pet in the Jaber’s yard,” he said.

The Jaber family was distraught while suffering the emotional loss of their home and a cherished pet just a few weeks prior to Christmas. However, on December 22, Burch along with Paul Davis Restoration contractors and insurance adjusters were completing the final scope of work and a job estimate, when the Jaber’s cat Ozzy came running down the stairs and practically jumped into Burch’s arms.  “I am amazed that Ozzy survived for 14 days in the freezing cold and in a fire charred house,” said Plant.

According to Burch, he quickly found a cat carrier and placed the cat in his warm truck and provided the cat with food and water.  Burch called Lila Jaber at work and told her that he had an early Christmas gift for her, her children and grandchildren. Jaber immediately left work and came to the job site.  “When Lila saw her pet cat, she broke down in tears,” said Burch. According to Burch, Ozzy must have found one of the last places in the house to survive the smoke and flames.   “There are no words to describe the emotions that were going on at this time,” he said.
