Now we’re into the third week of train term, those carefree summer days where your children abundantly roamed around big open spaces seem a long time ago. There’s no more than room to swing a cat, let alone scoot, bike or run in your tiny urban garden.

Yes, you could take them to the park, but it’s a bit chilly and you need to put the tea on. If only they could make use of that immense space at the front of your house. You know, the road, that thing that employed to be a place of play but over the last century got taken over by the car. It would be perfect for scooting, cycling, hop scotch and skipping if only you could get the cars out the way. Well-grounded for a few hours.
Well, now you can. Thanks to a pioneering year-long stab being run by Bristol City Council, residents can close their method to through traffic up to once a week, with the aim of giving children the space and liberation to play outside their homes. Providing all your neighbours are consulted, a Transient Play Street (TPS) Order will allow you to close a course for up to three hours once a week for a whole year. Though through traffic is diverted, residents can still woodland their cars, but are guided through at walking pace by one of the stewards placed at either end of the thoroughfare.
