I have a very spirited young cat. She is constantly trying to find ways to get outside and has chewed through nearly 500 dollars in electrical equipment. The past experience we've had with buying cat toys has not been extremely successful but we're willing to try again. ANYTHING to help keep her busy. Any suggestion as to what I should be looking for in a cat toy?
My three cats have so many store bought toys it's ridiculous. But you know what they play with the most? Tin foil balls, a ribbon, paper bags, garbage bag ties, and the laser pointer drives them crazy. You could get another cat around her age so she'll have a friend. But since that might not be an option, just know that she might lose interest in getting out as she grows up. Mine all did. And spray something with a citrus scent near your wires -- cats don't like the smell.

How to Make Cheap Cat Toys: Using Common Household Items to Create ...
In order to be happy and healthy, your cat should have many toys to keep him active and entertained. Unfortunately, buying a lot of toys from a store can be an expense you were not prepared for when you got your cat. Many of the most popular cat toys can be made from items that most people already have in their homes. Even if you don't have these things, most can be purchased for less than the cost of a new toy.
What You Will Need
You will most likely have many of these items already. If you do not they can be found at a grocery store or craft store. The items you will need to make the cat toys are:
Foil (heavy duty will last longer, but regular foil will work as well) String or yarn Pipe cleaners Pill bottles Buttons Socks Catnip (optional) Foil Ball Cat Toy
One of the most popular cat toys is a ball. Your cat can play with it alone, batting it around the room, or you can play with him by throwing it and watching her fly across the room after it. This is also the simplest toy to make. All you need to do is tear off a piece of foil and crumple it up into a ball. Your cat will play with a foil ball just as much as a ball you bought from a store.
Button Jingle Ball
Some cats like toys that make noise. Because of this, jingle balls are another popular cat toy. You can make your cat a toy that makes noise very easily with an old empty pill bottle and some buttons. You will want to use the smallest bottle you have to make it easier for your cat to play. Just take a couple of buttons and put them in the bottle. Replace the cap. Your cat now has another new toy. If you prefer, you could also use a bell or two instead of the buttons to make the toy jingle instead of rattle.
Pipe Cleaner Rings
Some cats like to carry their toys around. Others like to play fetch. For a toy that is easy for your cat to carry in his mouth, make a pipe cleaner ring. Simply take two pipe cleaners and twist them together. Bend them into a ring, and twist the ends together. Make sure the ends are pointed into the ring so your cat doesn’t cut her mouth. Both you and your cat will have a fantastic time playing with this toy.
