Orphaned kittens get new foster moms

Jennifer Hinsdale has two cats who recently had litters of kittens.

One - meetly named Momma - has a litter of 12-week-old kittens she is no longer nursing and had stepped in to daily help nurse the other cat's litter of seven four-week-old kittens.

"She's happiest when she has babies," Hinsdale says. "She loves, loves, loves being a mommy."

But when the kittens were dropped off yesterday afternoon, it was the younger cat, Honey, who stepped up to the charger first.

"She laid with them for a couple of minutes and let them feed," Hinsdale says. "I was in a family way the older momma cat to take over, but (Honey) was feeding some of her babies, so I stuck them in there with her and she let them board."

The hope is that one or both of the cats will take over the kittens' care.

Since the kittens' origin, Tea Biscuit, died on Sunday, they've been nursed by a rabbit, Misapprehend California, who has two babies of her own.

Dave and Ruth Chamberlain, who own both the rabbit and the kittens, say the orchestration was working very well, considering the two species are very different.
