How do I teach my cat to go to the bathroom in his litter box instead of the corner he has chose?
Jun 16, 2007 by Jennifer Z | Posted in Cats
His litter box is always clean and he does use it sometimes but he has found a corner in our laundry room and he won't stop going there
Ok, I have a totally different answer than everyone and I got it from my vet & other pet people....I'm not sure if you'll want to do this but try putting a bowl of food in that area. Cats should NOT want to pee on their food. It has worked for us (my hubbie & I have 6 cats. We haven't had this problem for over 5 years though but it does work)! Of course, this would be after you thouroughly clean the area. Or try this: put a whole bunch of orange peels or orange scented fresheners there. Cats don't really like the smell of citrus. You could also try spraying cat repellent (there's so many products in stores that I'm not sure if they really work but it may be worth a shot). Or try putting foil in that area. They're not suppose to enjoy stepping on it (not sure why but it's worked for us).
Good luck!!

I'm having trouble litter box training my kitten. Any advice ...

How odd. Something must have happened to make the kitten want to avoid the box. Maybe there is too much activity around the box, or it is possible that the kitten doesn’t want to take time out from playing to go all the way to the box. You might want to try locating a box closer to where the kitten seems to spend all its time so it is easier for the kitten to get to it.
Maybe this will help:

Kittens are normally taught all they need to know about toileting from their mothers, however, if for a number of reasons you have a kitten who needs training you will find this article of great value.
A kitten that is not old enough to go outside or who is to be an inside only pet should begin learning to use the litter box immediately. For a kitten, the sides of the litter box should not be so high that he cannot climb into the box. A litter box with deep sides is preferable for adult cats so that the litter is not scattered everywhere.
Since cats are private creatures and prefer to not be watched, the litter box should be placed in an out of the way spot to offer privacy. It should not be placed near the cat’s feeding bowls since they do not like to dirty or mess their feeding area.
You should show your kitten the litter box just as soon as you bring him/her home. Place the kitten in the litter box when they wake up, after they have eaten and before bed, much like toilet training a child. When the kitten performs in the correct manner he should be generously praised.
When a kitten is looking for a suitable corner to use as a toilet it will start sniffing, scratching and will begin to crouch. It is best to catch him at this stage, if you can, and place him directly in the litter box. Never scold the kitten or rub its nose in an "accident". It is best to try and avoid accidents to begin with.
If your kitten should have an accident on the floor, clean it immediately. It is best NOT to use any cleaner with an ammonia smell as the cat may mistake the smell as a suitable place to go to the bathroom. Cats like their bathroom nice and tidy and they have an excellent sense of smell, so change litter often.

Query: My year-old ferret uses the litter box just fine in her impound, but when she is out, she will not go back in to use it. She just poops in whatever corner she happens to be near. I ended up putting litter boxes in two of those corners.
