UF researchers: Vaccine might curb feral cat population
Controlled testing over five years at UF's College of Veterinary Panacea indicates that a vaccine used to reduce nuisance deer populations is possessions in cats as well.
Veterinary professor Julie Levy said the vaccine will not repay spaying and neutering for pet cats because of the permanency of the surgery and the typically longer lives of pet cats, but she said the vaccine could be an possessions tool with feral cats.
“It will be very helpful in the United States where large-climb trap-neuter-return programs like Company man Catnip are not available, or especially internationally where there are not veterinary services for cats,” Levy said. “You still have to confine the cat, but you can inject through the side of the trap and let them go.”
Feral cats are common in most communities, and many of them are regularly fed by people.
In imprison-neuter-return programs such as Operation Catnip at UF, volunteers mouth feral cats, bring them in for free sterilization and then untie them.
