I am converting a stray i recently took in, back into an outdoor cat. What shelter will keep him safe & here?

I want a sheltered "house" type area for him to stay in.
i am also contemplating a fenced in area.
how can i keep him safe and enclosed while i cannot
protect him from neighborhood strays?
[we found him when a dog was attacking him;
so i want to make sure that won't happen again]
also, the shelter will be under our carport.
Any type of pet "house" that is weather proof will work, as long as it does not leak water. My grandpa has one of those "dog-loo" plastic houses that look like an igloo on his porch, and the cats love it. It has a plastic door similar to a pet door that the animal can push to get in and out, and that helps to keep the weather out.
I also once had a boyfriend who built cat-houses out of plywood scraps, they were basically just a box with a hole in one side for the cat to get in and out. He put some old blankets and an electric heating pad (the kind you would use on yourself for a pulled muscle or something) in the box, and the cats LOVED it. If it's possible to run an outdoor extention cord to the area you want the house to be, I'd highly suggest trying that, at least in the winter months when it is very cold. If you or anyone you knows is handy with tools and building things, you could try to build a cat house yourself. Below I've pasted a few links with ideas on how to construct a cat shelter.
As far as fencing, there are various ways you can construct a cat fence so that he cannot escape outside of the fenced areas. Usually this consists of making some sort of material at the top of the fence that the cat cannot climb over. There's alot of ideas for this on the web too if you just do a search for "cat fence".
