Is there a more affordable alternative to Royal Canin Urinary SO dry dog food?

My vet prescribed a food that we can only buy through her and after a recent layoff I'm having trouble shelling out for the food.
I used to work for a dog food company and am well aware that the whole industry is pretty much a sham with shoddy testing and regulatory oversight.
Can anyone recommend a dog food that has low pH to prevent urinary crystals in dogs?
If this is the first time you dog has had crystals, I would buy the food once, because it will dissolve any crystals still in your dog's bladder. After that you should go back to a regular food- but choose one that is at least mid-grade, not the cheap stuff at the grocery store. The mid-grade ones are formulated to have a better pH balance, and will prevent crystals and stones.

What are the differences between the canned versions of Hill’s S/D and C/D prescription diets?
My cat had struvite stones removed 2 days ago and the vet said both of them would do the job, along with Royal Canin’s Urinary SO. Hill’s C/D and Royal Canin’s Urinary SO diets seem to be more general FLUTD management. This is the second time my cat has had stones, the first time was about 7 months ago and the stones were calcium oxalate, not struvite like now.
My cat is a 4 year old male who had a perineal urethrostomy performed after the first stone occurrence.
If money were no object, which of these 3 diets would you recommend? Thanks.
I’m glad your vet is smart enough to offer canned but I do not believe you need or want to feed these foods. They are horrible quality. A quality canned food with no grains will do the job. Please check out the link about crystals and stones Stay away from dry foods. If you are in Europe, I here the felix in jelly is pretty good http://www.nutram.com/petfood/_n_/urinarymalecat.aspx
I highly recommend the Nutram line of urinary care foods. They are available in 22 countries, but are not sold in any US stores. Best wishes.
Please note: these are not remedy foods, they will not get rid of crystals. They DO however, help to decrease the likelihood of a recurrance.
