What is the secret in the special urinary tract cat food for neutered males susceptible to blockages?

I have a friend and her male cat has had a blockage before that nearly killed him and now the vet wants him on hill's science diet urinary tract food. But it's sooooo expensive and I was wondering if there were any alternatives or cheaper places to get it or just any advice really.
Can't she give him some kind of supplement with regular food?
the secret is less magnesium...my cat had this same problem and I put him on Purina One for Urinary Tract Health ( im sure less expensive than Hill's Science Diet) and my cat hasnt had any urinary tract issues for over 2 yrs. My vet wanted me to buy a food that was over $20 a bag so I know how she feels...tell her to try the Purina One she can buy it at walmart.

Comrade sits complacently as a nurse wields a needle to draw out blood for up to 30 minutes. The cat doesn’t meow a beef, or struggle to get free.
That’s how it is when the 3-year-old cat comes for its bi-monthly go to donate blood at the Animal Emergency & Treatment Center in Grayslake.
Pursue’s owner, Kat Egelston, brings the all-black, complacent feline all the way from McHenry to give blood and relief other cats live.
It takes a special kind of cat to freely give blood, said Amanda Calvillo, veterinarian technician at the beastlike treatment center.
“Shadow is cool with being here, having her blood tired and hanging out with us,” she said.
Shadow does get a elfin kitty tranquilizer while giving blood.
Shadow is one of 41 cats and 76 dogs that subscribe to blood periodically at the Grayslake office. Six more cats and 19 dogs award blood at the center’s Chicago office.
Egelston said she’s motivated to bring on her cat for several reasons. First, her mother’s life was saved when she had a liver resettle and needed blood, so Egelston understands about the precious knack of blood.

Since cats are obligate carnivores (which means they MUST get their protein from animal sources), they cannot live on a vegetarian diet. If an owner is vegetarian, it would be unethical and cruel to impose that dietary philosophy on a creature who cannot survive that way. A cat will die a rather horrible death if forced onto a vegetarian diet.
It is not hypocritical for a vegetarian human to allow a cat to eat a proper diet. Humans are omnivores and thus we can choose to eat in a variety of ways but a cat cannot. It’s not “forcing” to give a cat meat…it’s simply fulfilling their dietary requirements.
Vegatarian cat food is VERY dangerous to obligate carnivores. It should be removed from the cat food market just as dry cat food should.
Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It’s completely species inappropriate.
All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don’t need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol’ house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats.
So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.
Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.
