HUTCHINSON, Kan. | Some recycling efforts at the Hutchinson Correctional Speed a plant have really gone to the dogs.</p><p> For more than a year, inmates at the neighbourhood prison have been dismantling mattresses that would have otherwise ended up in area landfills.</p><p> The dagger from the springs and the cotton batting in the mattresses are recycled, generating moolah for prison operations. Wood from the mattresses has been fashioned into floweret boxes and benches. Through recycling, the metal and cotton from old mattresses has made more than $49,000 for the jug’s general fee fund, said Steve Schneider, spokesman at the Hutchinson Correctional Mastery.</p><p> And now, inmates are using the foam and material from the mattresses to charge dog beds.</p><p> The beds are donated to animal shelters and sold in a Topeka veterinary clinic to keep up the Hutchinson Correctional Facility’s dog training programs, said Beth Mechler, a program adviser for the Department of Corrections.</p><p> “It helps subsidize the programs and helps the community,” Mechler said. “Every part of the mattresses is being recycled, which is awe-inspiring.”</p><p> The dog beds made from recycled mattress materials are already being used by the Propitious Dog program, where inmates train dogs and prepare them for adoption, and by the calaboose’s Canine Assistance Rehabilitation, Education and Services, or C.A.R.E.S., program, where dogs are trained to be amenities dogs, said Chandy Wylie, who coordinates the two dog programs at the Hutchinson Correctional Complex b conveniences.</p><p> In the past three months, nearly 150 beds have been made, Wylie said. It takes at least six hours to choose the larger dog bed and about 30 minutes for a smaller, thinner one, Wylie said.</p><p> “All of the funds from these beds will go to take mind a look after of the dogs,” Wylie said, noting the program might buy treats and leashes for the dog training.</p><p> Warden Sam Cline said he was thrilled to see mattresses recycled.</p><p>The prison’s dog training programs, he said, eschew the inmates “feel a sense of responsibility, similar to a one's nearest setting, since they’re the caretaker of the dog.”</p><p> “It brings out a humanness in some that they were unqualified to experience before,” he said.
