How do you teach a dog to be your running partner? How far is too far for them to run?

I have 3 dogs and no one to run with. I'd like to work with one of our dogs and train one to run with. Is there some kind of magic chart available that says what dogs run the best or what needs the dog may have? :) Hope this question makes sense. LOL. I would just like to do more running and would feel safer if I had one of the dogs with me. Plus it would be good for them to run too. :)
All 3 know the basics: how to heel, how to sit, stay, etc... They are all leash trained. We have a sheltie/border collie cross, a blue heeler/lab mix and a purebred pom pup. I am hoping that the blue heeler/lab mix will work out as a runner. I usually carry enough water for two, a friend suggested getting a water holder for my dog as well.

I think you should take both the bigger dogs running, for a border collie mix, he shouldn't be left out, they thrive on excersizing and it sounds like both dogs are well behaved enough not to trip you up. Just use 2 separate leashes for each dog, but hold them in the same hand. They will pick up easily, I"m sure.

As for the smaller dog, I'm not sayiing she doesnt deserve a walk, all dogs need walked, but she probably can't keep up as well as the other 2 with running.
