Stray Dog opens a big season with 'Tommy'

Hole its big, ambitious season with a big, ambitious production of the Who's "Tommy," Roam Dog Theatre sets itself a very high standard to live up to.

All dolled up in steampunk cut and rocking out with strong voices and a hot band led by Chris Petersen, "Tommy" proves that smart theater can also be lots of fun.

The Thespianism musical grew from a collaboration between Who guitarist-songwriter Pete Townshend (the 1969 "Tommy" album is as a rule his creation) and Des McAnuff, artistic director of Canada's Stratford Shakespeare Festivities. Debuting on Broadway in 1993, it includes nearly all of the songs from the album and one addition. It maintains the same basic plot, though it stresses the household aspects of the story and downplays its messianic aspirations.

This notwithstanding out, the "deaf, dumb and blind boy" devastated by psychic wounds turns into a pinball wizard and, after his "miracle cure-all," a kind of pop star.

He ultimately recoils from celebrity, leaving much to be desired only to be like other people, connected in ordinary relationships, rather than a cult design worshipped (and then betrayed) by his disciples. In other words, it's a story you might allow from the tabloids as much as the New Testament.

Aussome Dogs: USDAA -Vero Beach (PBAC)

So Friday was Team, I only ran Trin, on team "Rev, White and Blue" with Tori & Rev and Kristie & Hemi. Trin E’d in STD, she was stressed and I didn’t deal with it correctly. Otherwise though, Trin got the WEAVE GAMBLE! in team gamblers (whoa!) and she Q’d in Team Jumpers, got through 6 in the closing of Team Snooker with two 7’s and 6 in the opening. She was clean in the relay, as was Rev, however Gary handled Hemi (Kristie had school) and he handled Hemi right over an OC jump so no team Q for us. :) Saturday was rainy and COLD. No, Freezing. We kept the dogs in the car and spent a lot of time running back and forth to warm up in the car. Trin NQ’d in Master Gamblers… that will be our nemesis for the ADCH, she was a good girl, just not a Gamble we could do. Grand Prix was a NICE run, she was pretty fast and happy, but missed the weave entry (only weave fault all weekend) because I got disoriented from my front cross. She was a little tentative on their big, heavy, wooden teeter, so I opted for a front after it to drive her forward towards me and then misaligned myself. Oh well. She did Q in Masters Snooker with 3 7’s in the opening, however USDAA Lesson #1: Always check your scores * *. They did not record my closing points so no Q earned, I even cried a little to try to get it changed, no dice. Bah! Steeplechase, Trin had an OC to a tunnel. Still not really sure what happened there? Comments anyone? I slowed down, took a lateral step, but maybe I turned my shoulders too abruptly? Still I think she was just like, “I don’t wanna do another huge frame today” Java only ran in Steeplechase and I am a bad momma. I was so excited to run her in Steeplechase I was thinking about myself and handling and not thinking about the dog I had at the end of the leash. Steeplechase was at night and it is a big, exciting class. Lots of excited energy, lots of people crowded around the ring opening. I let myself get right...
