How can we stop our cats from peeing on furniture?
We have a family room in the front of our house which does not get much use. We had some cheap furniture in there that our two cats ruined by peeing all over them. Once we removed that furniture, the urinating stopped. We bought new furniture this week, and put a cover (a sheet) on it, just in case, and they have pee'd on this. The only other furniture in this room is a Chest, two end tables, and the dog crate. If it were the dog crate causing them to assert themselves, wouldnt they have continued peeing even when there was no furniture in the room?
Please, do NOT slap the kitty like someone above me said. Cats don't learn that way... they wouldn't understand. Are your cats fixed? When you spay/neuter a cat it's supposed to help with the "spraying" as it's called. It's them marking their territory. Fixing usually does help this.
However... if they are already fixed, there could be some other underlying problem. How many cats do you have? The "rule" is you should have one litter box for each cat, plus one. So... if you have two cats, you should have three litter boxes. We have two cats and only have two litter boxes, but it works for us. So... I guess the "plus one" is... just... I don't know. But yeah. Also, make sure the litter boxes are cleaned regularly. Cats have an amazing sense of smell... and can smell odors that we can't.
If all this is already done and tried, and they are still peeing... I would take them to the vet. Something else could be wrong with them.
