What exactly are sea monkeys? My mom wants to get those for my little sister instead of a more interactive pet?

I don't think she will like them. She likes watching and helping with my fish tank and my rats. Are sea monkeys fun? Will they die in a filtered tank?
My sister will be 11 this spring and I really think she can handle a fish. She already takes care of animals in FFA a the school so she knows to research and stuff.
She says she wants a red-eyed tree frog or a ball python and I don't think she will like sea monkeys because they are so low maintenance they are dull.
Does anybody think they will be a good pet?
Some say Sea-Monkeys are a kind of shrimp. Others insist the creepy little things are the devil's spawn. Care to guess who's right?
Sea-Monkeys are indeed a type of brine shrimp. According to the official site, Sea-Monkeys grow to between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch and "exist in a state of suspended animation." Contrary to their packaging, they don't grow up to look like the "naked humanoids once displayed in the product's kitschy comic-book advertisements." Pity that.
But why the name, "Sea-Monkeys"? As far as i can tell, it's just a clever marketing ploy. Again, according to the product's official site, Sea-Monkeys got their name for two reasons. First, like monkeys, they have tails. And second, their playful behavior is (apparently) reminiscent of primates.
A surprisingly in-depth fan site (yes, Sea-Monkeys have fan sites, too) covers just about every question you could possibly have about these freaks, er, miracles of nature. As far as pets go, they're no substitute for a dog. Still, any creature that breathes through its feet must be at least kind of cool.

Sorry, but every night is not a Pink Floyd laser light show roller disco happy dress-up like Little Riding Hood and do the robot dance freak show in my household. And I don’t get the urge to hypnotize my cat, have it fall asleep and then make it walk around upright like a human, as if it’s the court jester and I’m the king.
If my cat gets cold, it cuddles under the covers; I don’t get out its ironic “mouse” outfit. If it has to go poopy, we don’t share the same toilet. There are no catnip containers shaped like squirrels or parakeets. Those things are utterly worthless. It’s like giving a nursing home resident a permanently sealed bag of soup.
To be honest, my cat goes nuts every time it walks by the floor-length mirror in the living room. She growls, runs away, runs back, swats at it, etc. Ball up a piece of aluminum foil and she’s happy as a clam on a water slide.
So I definitely don’t need to resort to aiming laser beams at its eyeballs! Especially given that federally funded scientists are testing laser patterns to see if they can be used to induce homicidal behavior. No thanks. I just found out that the D. C. in Washington D. C. stands for Demon Cat, so count me out. And you get what you’re asking for if you buy this.

This may be a great product but what about the danger to the eyes of the pet? Nothing in the product description mentioned any safe guards. I have had cats & dogs that went nuts over lasers but they were hand held & great care was taken to make sure that the laser never got close to the eyes. It only takes a split second to do PERMANENT damage. If there are safe guards then you can’t beat it. I gave it two stars but without safety 0 stars. . . . . . with safe assurances 5 stars.
My cats are absolutely in love with this toy. The first one we received was broken right out of the box but, Amazon quickly replaced it. We got the second one and my two cats went absolutely nuts for this thing. The only problem I see with it so far is the 15 minutes auto shut-off feature.
