JUNEAU - "My job is to survive messes," says Bridget Milligan, the owner, intriguer and seamstress behind the Kodiak Coat Company.
Her job seems more about making high-quality handmade outerwear, so I was a bit skeptical of these first words out of her doorway upon entering the Kodiak Coat workspace. Looking around at the yards of fleece, half-made coats and piles of dyed wool, I consideration that for a creative space it was fairly neat and tidy. With her daughter Jasmine Allen around to keep the subject running smoothly and assistant Dani Byers at her side, it turns out Milligan can both fanatic out coats and have time to make creative messes, which for her is where the fun is.
"I'd rather go along with and make things, but my job is to make coats," she says, measure wistfully.
Milligan faces the quandary of almost every successful crafter-turned-pro: how to find moment to experiment in between creating the money-earning staples. But with a but help she will unleash both a batch of new coats

I’m really finding it hard to come to a decision with what I feel about this coat.
You can definitely see the attention to detail and design that’s gone into it (for example I’m loving the zip detailing to the front side, as well as the yellow tags) but the fact it is a rugged, outdoor coat means it’s never truly going to be stylish…
However maybe I’m being a little harsh because if you were stand next to someone who’d just bought their “rugged” coat from the high street you’dl definitely be able to see the difference..

Ive had this jacket 2 yrs. I love it, it was the best xmas gift yet, but do have complaints. Its a rugged look, functions well… and i sigh at saying “well”. The price tag does not buy you anything but the style, in comparison to what you can get from canada goose, the north face or helly hansen. yes its real fur trim but the price tag 2 yrs ago was $900 and it does not use any technical fabrics such as gore tex, eVent, HYVAC to compensate that price. the hardware, fabric, sewing and zippers are sturdy, the top clasp is a parachute clip with pull cord. there is plenty of pocket space, although the under arm pit pocket is awkward to use (thats the left side front pocket, it actually goes into the jacket and under the arm pit and into your back) its a very large pocket. i once fit a bag of mcdonalds (meal for 3) in there, but it wasnt comfortable because its not a pocket in addition to the jacket but a pocket that goes into the jacket. the two hand warmer pockets at the mid level are nicely placed, the positioning keeps you bundled up, but the left pocket is out side that arm pit pocket, so you end up with 1 hand warm inside the coat next to your body and the other is kind of out there in the shell, if that makes sense. the overall make of the jacket does give the look of what it costs. furthermore there are no specifications on this brand at all, not even from parajumpers.it/ i would hope that somewhere there’d be something telling you the down fill amount the temp rating or anything… none, all ive gotten is nylon, down, coyote fur. originally i wanted a moncler, but opted for the parajumper kodiak parka… i thought the moncler was too “prissy” by that i mean i thought it looked very delicate, and the glossy colors added to that. i like colors but i wanted a staple every day all the time winter jacket, monclers shiny black, orange, red etc were not going to fit the bill, but i bet it wouldve worked to par on pricing. i made it through a night of 16 degrees f in nyc new years eve, wandering around times square, but expected so much more from a jacket at this price. the top 1/2 is fitted like a suit, i like that about it, the bottom 1/2 flares out (i guess to compensate for parajumper pants) which lets a lot of wind in. IT IS NOT BREATHABLE in the least bit, a 30 minute leisure walk to the train station and sweat is rolling down my back from the all the moisture locked inside. the down lining is quite thin, very thin to be considered a down lining… more like a quilted padding, not much room for down in it to store warmth. if you havent seen one in person, the photos are misleading, most pics make it look glossy, silky and lightweight. its not! its heavy, tough, and feels similar to that rugged carhart fabric. you may not tell, but i really do love the jacket… that real parajumper look, i mean really… it looks and feels like the real deal in person. the price tag leaves a lot of room for disappointment when expecting a technical winter jacket ready for alaska… itll take it, but youll need some polypro heavyweight underwear, a mid layer, fleece layer and then this jacket and thats just for a night out in nyc. so i’d like to leave my point of view since there arent enough 1st hand experience reviews on this jacket. you really need to try it on and go over it in person to make a smart decision. get it if you can afford it, its the look you want. pass on it if youre looking for something “worth” the price for more than looks.
