I need to select fish and filters for a 55 gallon aquarium?

I won a 55 gallon aquarium and stand and don't know what to fill it with.
I've had smaller freshwater aquariums with various goldfish and guppies. I even had a couple of Piranhas.
I like the color and beauty of saltwater fish but don't like all the upkeep required to the tank.
Are sharks hard to take care of and what kind of fish can be with them?
Do I need a fluval style canister for a 55? If I get one, do I still need a bio wheel?

For the filter you don't need the bio wheel.
Cichlids are the best replacement of saltwater fish. Some are very beautiful.

Some good cichlids would be electric yellow cichlid, frontosa, blood parrot, angelfish, and a severum would look nice.

Or you could keep an oscar.

A good african cichlid tank would be:
6 electric yellow cichlids
4 electric blue cichlids
and some other mbunas
