How to upgrade an aquarium light fixture?

Hi I have a 55 gallon Walmart aquarium and I want to upgrade the lighting so I can plant it. Are there any DIY tutorials out there? I know they have kits but they're like $50 each and I'd need two of them plus I live in Hawaii and shipping is a b*tch out here so I want to try to do it a cheaper way

Describe your current hood; are you using cfl's, t5's, t8's? What is your wattage and at what kelvin rating?
