what is the best filtration device for a cichlid aquarium?

right now i am using what came with my aquarium "kit" which is a top fin brand overflow type filter, it clogs up every couple days and i have to clean the filters. i would like to buy a better filtration device.
it is a 55 gallon tank by the way.

For messy cichlids you want to use the different types of filters to their best advantage. Most cichlid keepers will go with a low flow canister filter such as an Eheim for bio filtration. For mechanical filtration it's hard to beat the Aqua Clear line of power filters.

Top Fin is junk, as is much of what is sold in kits offered by your chain pet shops. Consider a heater upgrade as well, the VisiTherm Stealth line is designed to be unbreakable for cichlid setups.
