Bizarre methods of stripping the fry/eggs from a mouthbrooding female cichlid.
B chromosomes have a functional effect on sex conclusion in a species of cichlid fishes from Lake Victoria, according to a review by Japanese researchers to be published in open-access review PLoS Genetics on August 18th, 2011. The researchers found sex-correspondence distortions caused by B chromosomes in the breeding line of the cichlids, as well as several protein-coding genes in the B chromosomes. The resultant correspondence was female biased, suggesting a role for B chromosomes in female sex judgement.
The B chromosome was first identified by E. B. Wilson in 1907. B chromosomes (or supplementary chromosomes) are additional to the standard set of chromosomes (autosomes and sex chromosomes) in an structure. They have been found in many species (more than 1,000) over the last hundred years. Although they are widely distributed, the less of B chromosomes on host organisms has not been detected. Indeed, B chromosomes have been brown study to be a selfish genetic element, lacking genes and having no take place on the organism. It has previously been proposed that the unique features shared by B chromosomes and sex chromosomes refer to an evolutionary relation between them. However, research into B chromosomes has been limited to a few species and the confusion has not been resolved.
I have a red devil cichlid.. and I have several bottom feeders in with him.. I was told I wouldn't get anything in with him.. But so far we have all been managing, the loaches have plenty of hiding places.. But Rocky seems in a terrible mood and is frantically chasing if he spots one.... He is normally ok about the loaches, like he had accepted them.. Apprx 4" He came in the tank.. My sis bought the tank and he was still in it when she went for it.. No mention of the fish though on Ebay so she was a bit shocked.. she wanted to put tropical fish in it... So I had him... I don't know how old he is... I have had him about 3 months. maybe a bit more not sure.. anyway.. I wasn't told he couldn't have a mate at first and I got him one but had to take it back. I had explained to the aquatic centre what I had.... he nearly chased it out the tank.. so I settled with the bottom feeders who he isn't to bothered about.. He is generally very laid back and hates me.... But earlier he was going mental. When I intro the bottom feeders I changed the tank round so he didn't feel like he owned everything.... Unfortunately, like other Central American cichlids, Red Devils are known for their boisterous and sometimes violent temperaments...
Newest aquariums are watery wonders
Those heading in to pick up a goldfish might find themselves mesmerized by freshwater tanks filled with peacock cichlids, twinkling betas and friendly discus fish. The saltwater tanks, however, are the biggest stretch. Each features an array of anemones
