is a fish tank light an absolute neccessity for a fish tank?

because the fish light is like, bigger then the tank, but it still worksss. but i was wondering if a light was a neccessity. also, if there is no lid for your tank *its lost :P and its octagon-long-ways shaped so i cant find it in stores* is there a good substitute lid i could use?

All that matters is that the fish get some day to enjoy. They can see fine by ambient room or window lighting, so no, a light is not necessary.

However, some fish, like common goldfish, rely on light for their pigmentation. Without it they will still be healthy, but colour will fade.

I agree, plexiglass is perfect for your purposes. You can get glass cut too, but it will cost more.

Modern variety of fish tanks and lighting equipment to it available in pet shops and in the market is striking. The choice of your first aquarium can make you feel off the rails, but you should not be worried about this, because the choice of fish tank as well as lamps is not as difficult as it may seem from the first sight. So, what should you be guided by when you choose your lighting equipment? Well, there are three main factors, influencing the choice – the size of your fish tank, the types of fish you are going to have and the plants that you are going to grow in your aquarium. These criteria will narrow the borders of your search significantly. Most people, who have never had aquariums and are about to install them in their house, should understand one simple rule – the high price of the lighting equipment and the size of lamps cannot guarantee that the lighting will be perfect for your aquarium. The principle ‘the more expensive – the better’ does not work in this case. If you are not sure that this or that lamp is suitable in your aquarium, start with the simplest and cheapest lamp. If you see, that your plants look faded and your fish are not as active as usually – try to install the more powerful lamp, because your plants and species are probably short of light, needed for their normal vital activity. There are different types of lamps available in most of pet shops. If you want to have a small fish tank, the most suitable lamps are LED lamps, fluorescent and filament lamps. The cheapest are filament and fluorescent lamps, however, they have one significant disadvantage. They produce much heat, which can cause the increase of temperature in your aquarium. Abrupt temperature drops and increases are not recommended, because your fish can be turned into shock and even die. Hence, you have to do your best to prevent these temperature changes. If you have sensitive species in your aquarium, you’d better choose the LED bulbs. On the one hand, they can be expensive for you, but on the other hand, the period of their work is about 2000 hours and they don’t influence the temperature of water, being energy efficient. Here you are to decide, what is more important for you – the price or the health of your fish. If you have a saltwater aquarium with tropical fish in it, you must be aware of some peculiarities of their life. Tropical fish tend to distinguish the day and the night, so you have to arrange your lighting the way it produces the weak light in the night to imitate the moonlight, which can usually be distinguished by marine inhabitants.
