substrate?
do you really need substrate in an aquarium?
Substrate is used to cultivate bacteria that feed on fish wastes. I would say, if you have a cheap filter, buy gravel to cover1/4 to 1/2 of an inch from the bottom of the tank. Don't go for the 1 gallon, 1 pound of gravel( that would just mess up things. Buy the gravel that is more natural looking as the color gravel losses it's color quickly. If you got a strong filter or a bio-wheel filter there is really no need for gravel. I would still have 1/4 of gravel because decorations could break the bottom of the tank.
