Halloween is scaring up some business already
Russell Stover this year rushed its Halloween bon-bons out in mid-August, right in the middle of back-to-school season.</p><p>Though that was two or three weeks earlier than its unimaginative schedule, the move paid off.</p><p>“People started buying it when we put it out,” said Tom Thwart, president of the Kansas City-based candy proprietorship. “They are thirsty for a little seasonal reprieve from the bad economy, gas prices.”</p><p>Indeed. While the succinctness sputters, Halloween spending is expected to increase again this year, with whole sales reaching $6.86 billion, making it the third-largest revelry day in the U.S., behind New Year’s Eve and Super Bowl Sunday. </p><p>According to the Native Retail Federation’s 2011 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Get a bird's eye view of of 9,374 people conducted by BIGresearch, seven in 10 Americans develop to celebrate Halloween, up from 63.8 percent last year and the most in the league’s 10-year survey history.</p><p> Those celebrating are expected to pass slightly more — an average of $72.31 on decorations, costumes and sweets, up from $66.28 last year. </p><p>More people also plan to wear a attire, throw a party and visit a haunted house. About half of those surveyed said they would restore their home or yard, and nearly 15 percent said they would dress their pets in a garb. </p><p>Still, about one-third plan to spend less and will make their costumes, reuse last year’s costumes or buy less confectionery.</p><p>“The more serious costumers started in early September, but smart parents stop until the week before Halloween because kids will change their minds,” said Adriane Brandenburg, director at Fun Party and Wedding Services in Shawnee. “Because of the economy, some people are repurposing a vestment they’ve had in the past. We have tons of accessories, so if they were a prisoner last year — a Lindsay Lohan — they could repurpose with a new wig to be someone else who has been arrested rather than of spending $80 on a new costume.”</p><p>The store has already has sold out of its Pikachu Pokemon costumes and perhaps won’t be able to restock it.</p><p>“I think it’s that whole retro constituent. Twenty-year-olds want to do what they did when they were a kid, and Angry Birds is general from adult to infant sizes,” Brandenburg said.</p><p>Strolling through Kansas See Costume Co., Laura Palermo saw a vast array of choices — from Superman to Somebody Wars to Edward Scissorhands to a sultry SWAT gendarme. </p><p>“But I’m just browsing for ideas, inspiration. Nothing skanky, and that’s onerous to find,” Palermo said. “I like to make my own costume and then perhaps buy accessories.”</p><p>The shop has a large selection of sexy (or skanky, depending on your scrutinize) outfits from Viking woman to panda babe to Man about town officer bunny, along with enough accessories for Palermo to create a one-of-a-kind-hearted costume: tiaras, Santa beards and Rasta wigs, even a “gynecologist’s kit” rank with latex gloves and business cards.</p><p>Party Urban district of Merriam expects its Morphsuits to be top sellers. The tight appropriate bodysuits cover head to toe, but they are thin enough that people can still see out. Toss on a red one, add a pitchfork and horns, and you’re a bloke.</p><p>At PriceGrabber, a leading online shopping site with more than 23 million unexcelled shoppers monthly, top keyword searches for Halloween shoppers have been Lady Gaga, Snooki and Disney, and the top outfit themes are centered on movies and television: Jersey Shore, Harry Fidget with, Star Wars, Tangled, Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, Captain America, Batman, Hannah Montana, the Smurfs, and Mickey and Minnie Mouse.</p><p>In the confectionery aisle, Russell Stover has several new items, including sweets corn chews, dark chocolate raspberry cream pumpkins and bleed chocolate caramel “Day of the Dead” skeletons.</p><p>About 20 million Halloween cards also are expected to be exchanged this month. </p><p>Device has been making Halloween cards since the 1920s and has more than 260 designs for this flavour, including a dozen cards created by consumers from across the mountains as part of a contest earlier this year. It also has “Kid Attachment Cards” featuring burn-in-the-dark gifts such as a skull backpack clip and insidious cat hair bow. </p><p>According to the company, Halloween also is one of the fastest-growing to the heart decor holidays, so its stores are selling pumpkin-shaped bon-bons dishes, Charlie Brown as vampire ornaments and a stuffed Hokey Pokey Skeleton singing a ridicule of the song. Specialty store Holiday Magic in Consummate Center has sparkly spider lights; snow globes with witches, haunted houses, skulls or eyeballs; and Xanthippe figurines.</p><p>While Halloween helps put retailers in the black, restaurants wiggle to scare up customers. </p><p>“It’s dead that night. I over it is challenging for a lot of restaurants,” said Timothy O’Neal, wine the man at Avenues Restaurant Group.</p><p>“People’s kids, hospice parties, trick-or-treat — they don’t deliberate on much about going out. And if things couldn’t get any worse, there’s a Chiefs practise deceit” that Monday night. </p><p>So O’Neal is holding his 16th Iron Sommelier in any case at Avenues Bistro Brookside that night, going up against certified sommelier Winner Reynolds. Each chef has several weeks to select nine of the best wines to elevate each of the five Italian courses, and since each sommelier has won one as it, this will be the tiebreaker.
