Will a blue tongue skink be happy in a 40 gallon terrarium?
This is the largest tank my space will allow. Blue tongue skinks seem like wonderful lizards, but if I do get one, i don't want it to feel cramped. I've read some places that 50 gallon should be the minimum, while others say 40 gallon. If the skink just won't be happy with 40 gallons, I won't buy one. This would be my first lizard (reptile actually), so I'll just go for something smaller like a crested gecko or a leopard gecko if I can't provide for a bluey.
could this possibly be big enough for a bearded dragon?
blue tongues get to about 20 inches long, and so i think that a 40 gallon would be too small - particularly with hides and logs and things in there to entertain him. just keeping it in a clinical environment - a hide and a waterbowl, then the 40 gallons would be a bare minimum - it'd be much happier in a larger tank.
bearded dragons are a bit more active than the skinks, and so would be happier in atleast a 50 gallon tank.
first time lizards that would be very happy in a 40 gallon are:
1 - 4 leopard geckos (just one male), although if it is your first reptile, its best just to get one or two of them so you arent overwhelmed.
a berber skink. they are very pretty and get really tame with a little handlind, but dont get quite as big as the blues
a small group of sadfish skinks - they are really interesting little guys
