I'd suggest adopting a few just to help someone who can't take of them anymore. You might be able to find something on Craigslist. Hermitcrabassociation has a good adoption program (Crabstreetjournal's is good too, just stricter).

You could probably get a cheaper tank by looking around. Craigslist, garage sells, and hell even thrift stores can have a good tank.
Bake sand prior to use. It's up to you whether you use the EE in addition to sand. EE would be easier to carry around, but is more expensive.
You won't need the mist machine. It's easier and cheaper to make one on your own anyway.

You should have at least 24 shells(3 shells per crab), but more is always better. Ebay will have some good deals on shells.
Here's some ideas for a hideys and climbing stuff.
Plastic vines/plants-climbing
coco huts(you can make them yourself or buy them)-hidey
legos(you can make some nice things if you're good with them)-hidey and climbing
A shower caddy makes a good second level
ceramic pots-hidey
moss pit(oodles of fun for the burrowing hermie, but never use it as a substrate)-humidity
log(none collected outside please)-hidey and climbing
a plastic basket-climbing
fish net-climbing
reptile/fish caves(some hamsters hideys like igloos are fine as well
a rock wall-climbing
coco wall-climbing
organic bromeliads
The hermies will probably destroy them quickly. Anyway it's a nice treat and climbing toy(if it's big enough). :3
plastic containers(if you got a tall one, you could fiddle with it to make a hidey/climbing toy)
Strong suction cups(maybe some sold for fish tanks, weak ones don't hold up well) and aquarium silicone will hold just about anything in your tank.
You can use anything for a food bowl, just look for something lying around like a peanut butter cap or scallop. You can also try using tupperware for the water.
The UTH probably won't heat a 75 gallon tank. I'd recommend heat lights instead. Chicken brooding lights are cheap and great for heating the tank.
As long as your dechlorinator doesn't have stress or slime coat, it's fine.
The most your looking at is $337.48.

75 Gallon Tank: Lake Tanganyika?

I have acquired a 75 gallon tank and am in the process of finding all the equipment to get it set up. In the mean time I have not been able to find a decent stock list for such a set-up. Ideally I want to include shell dwellers, rock/cave dwellers, and possible some open water stuff. Curious what some people would do given this circumstances. Also any side notes on aquascaping the rocks and shells in this tank would be nice. Thanks! My next question would then be what be be the most compatible choices for a community of shell dwellers and cave dwellers, and how many of each could a 75 house in terms of allowing proper territories to be set up? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I really want to make this tank count and I can't find much on Tanganyika compatibility. Multi's are the easiest shellies to get along with overall. The larger species are more difficult to pair up and won't guard their fry after they're free-swimming. If they don't eat their own fry the other fish likely will. Substrate spawners like Julies, calvus, etc. are pair-bonding fish. Best to start with a group of each, then move out the extras after you have an established breeding pair. Paracyp's and J. transcriptus are probably the least aggressive species in general, Paracyp's would work as a group (2m/3-4f) rather than a single pair. Calvus or comp's are peaceful, even shy, but they are fry predators.
