Lizard Supplies - Reptile Supplies

what lizard supplies are needed?

What supplies are needed for a lizard from a desert habitat? I want to get a thorny devil. I have a old 10 gallon fish tank and some sand. And do these guys mind being handled a lot? How much do they eat daily? Are they aggressive or nippy? Is my tank big enough? What would a good habitat be for it, etc, etc.
Thanks so much!!

Bad bad choice as a pet. They eat harvester ants and those ants cost a lot. Its like owning 10 Saint Bernard's when it comes to feeding. But if you really want one then I say go for a 20 long. Use a ceramic heat emitter for heat and you need a Uvb bulb since they are diurnal. Play-sand or clay would be the best substrate. You need 2 hides. You need some plants. They don't like being handled. An adult eats 3000+ harvester ants a day, which equals 5000+ U.S Dollars a month.

Reptile presentation a big hit at pet show

Spiders, tarantulas, snakes and lizards are still icky with some youngsters and most once for the moms and dads attending the third annual Greater Moncton Pet Show held at the Beaver Curling Nucleus.

It's the first year that a presentation on reptiles was included in the show and was an instantaneous hit with the children and a few adventuresome moms. A petting zoo was set up at the rear after the show for anyone short of to pet the more tamed reptiles including Gonzo, the docile alligator whose way in was taped up for obvious reasons.

Jennifer Berry and Jennifer Linthorne of Riverview brought their children to see the reptiles and weren't let down, even though there weren't eager to pet any of them. "I thought they did a great job. The kids were nervous about petting" the reptiles, said Berry.

"Awesome, replied callow Sarah Berry. "I like the snakes. They're not that horrible."

"That's the biggest turtle I ever saw," said Zachary Linthorne. Brandon Linthorne liked the alligator.

Essential Lizard Supplies - Life123

Good lizard care begins with a tank to create the animal's habitat. Tanks make the best environment, because it's easy to control lighting, temperature and humidity.

For smaller lizards, a 20-gallon or 40-gallon tank will do; these tanks can hold lizards up to 24 inches long. For larger lizards, you'll need to find a custom tank and lid.

Make sure that the lid of the tank is securely attached. Lizards are intelligent and will find ways to escape, given the opportunity. The tank should have at least one corner that's obscured from view, either by artificial plants, branches or a lizard house. This gives your pet a place to hide when it feels threatened, which reduces stress and promotes good health.

Lighting Most lizards live in hot, dry climates or hot tropical climates. You need to recreate that climate as close as possible. Most lizards are cold-blooded, so they need light and heat to regulate their body temperature. There is also evidence that lizards need exposure to UVA and UVB rays for proper health.

There are two different types of lights needed for lizards: a basking light, for heat, and a UV light for lizards that need UV rays from the sun. Putting the lizard's tank in direct sunlight usually isn't the best choice, as it may not get enough sun or the temperature in the tank may get too hot. A UV lamp that runs the length of the tank is best, with a basking light mounted in a corner so that the lizard can get within a few inches of it. Make sure these lights don't get so hot that they'll burn your pet. UV lamps fade in intensity over time, so they need to be replaced on a regular basis.

Substrate Compressed coconut fiber is ideal for most reptiles and amphibians. For lizards that require a tropical atmosphere, you can dampen the coconut fiber to create a humid environment. For those that require a hot, dry atmosphere, the compressed coconut fiber can be used dry. Substrate not only enhances the appearance of the terrarium, but it also keeps spilled food and water, feces and urine away from the lizard.
