For those of you who be familiar with nothing about reptiles, or indeed the other participants at this year’s Reptile and Terrarium Fair, here are four stimulating facts to get you in the mood.
1. Unlike most lizards, geckos are born without eyelids. To keep their eyes from drying out, geckos lick their eyeballs with their large tongue. Think you could do that? Give it a try!
2. Kingsnakes are known as reptile royals because they eat other snakes. Although a couple of drops of rattlesnake venom could put you or me on moving spirit support, to a king snake it’s like barbeque sauce.
3. Most reptiles weep their old skin several times each year, and leave them behind. But you’ll never find a gecko’s old coat, because they eat it before it falls off, in order to retain the nutrients! How’s that for an afterschool nosh?
4. Many turtles and tortoises live for more than a century.
Of course, if you’re the genus that jumps on the nearest chair when a spider’s in the house, then I’m established you’ll have better places to be this upcoming Saturday. Because this is the day on which all manner of creepy-crawlies take over - be it slithery snakes, loathsome reptiles or spooky spiders – the Rødovrehallen venue in the western suburbs.
This lady is insanely wrong when it comes to snakes. For one, Python regius is nocturnal therefore not needing the sunlight for processing D3 as do diurnal lizards and chelonians. I’ve never seen or heard of anyone deworming their snakes twice a year. Plus I saw a cricket in the corn snakes cage on one of her vids, wtf is up with that!?!
Nikki1292 says:Uh, snakes, well ball pythons, are nocturnal. They don’t need sunlight to process D3, they get that from their food (at least I think thats where they get it lol). Anyways, they just need a heat spot so that they can get warm when they want to and a cool spot to cool down. I don’t know who this lady thinks she is, but I’m 15 and I think I know more about them. All her videos seem worthless.
