Is it okay to use reptile sand in a finch aviary?
I went to the pet store in search of sand to use in the aviary I am building tomorrow. The only sand they had was reptile calcium sand so I bought two bags of that, figuring that since calcium is so important for birds anyway, it couldn't hurt to have it added to the sand. The reason I am not using newspaper is because I am planning to add a few button quail eventually, and they prefer sand.
Is there anything in the reptile sand that can hurt my finches or the quail?
I think some sand is good for birds. The birds eat sand to better digest food. so you might be ok.
But have you thought about English Ivy plants? I gave a couple to my finches...and
The finches had a ball ripping it apart for nesting material. The plant also makes for a great hiding spot.
