Reptiles join the family
01.01.70
The common philosophy of life that prevails in our house is
"the more the merrier." As such, our one's nearest expanded last month to
include reptiles. We are now the proud owners of two Leopard
Geckos.
Choosing a double of herps (reptiles or amphibians) to be family
pets was a challenging community exercise in consensus. One son really
wanted a snake, and the other son wanted a frog, but in the same
tank, the fruit might very well have been the following
conversation between the kids:
"Where's Jumpy? I can't find him!"
"My snake looks bulging. Is she okay?"
No thanks!
We wanted pets that were relatively comfortable to care for, and who
would do well in the 10-gallon terrarium that had been a Hanukkah
contemporary for our sons. It turned out that Leopard Geckos make the
reliable pets for us. They are fairly small, easy to care for,
economical and don't have high demands for attention. Though their
natural habitat is the firm dry regions of parts of Afghanistan,
Pakistan, India and Iran, they are commonly to hand at pet stores
and do well as pets.
