Question 1: Heey everyone i bought this new cage and i really like and so does my Syrian Hamster but the thing is she has a hard time going through the tubes to get to the petting zone (but mainly only when she has food in her pouches). I have wanted another hamster and i was wondering if i should get a dwarf hamster to put in the new cage and put my Syrian back in her old cage.
Question 2: When and if i do get a new hamster (dwarf?) how are they different then syrians (other than smaller) ?.
Hope you can help :D
1. It depends on the kind of cage, is it quite big? If you were hoping to get a dwarf, you must be aware that they need a lot more space than Syrians, well in my experience Campbell Dwarfs and Roborovski Dwarfs do. If stress is caused by not being able to access the 'petting zone' then I would most definitely move her to the old cage.
2. Think about Dwarfs before you get one. They are escape artists, even more so than Syrians. Chinese Dwarf Hamsters are a good bet for a first time Dwarf owner, as they are relatively slow and cautious. They love to cling to your fingers and explore around your neck and back. Russian Campbell Dwarfs are quite a big leap up from Chinese Dwarfs, as they suddenly become so much faster and are prone to a lot more things. Russian Campbell Winter Whites have ALWAYS been prone to Diabetes, it's through bad breeding. So then Campbell Dwarfs and Winter Whites have been bred, and therefore passing on bad genes, resulting in either early on-set diabetes (4-6 mths.) or late on-set diabetes (6+ mths.) Just please consider these things, I'm not at all trying to sway your choice, don't worry!
I think you have to be dedicated to dwarf hamsters to get a Roborovski Hamster, as they are fast, very fast!!! They are overall very, very nice hamsters but their only down side is their speed.
Dwarf hamsters overall tend to be more laid back hamsters (depends though) and a lot more social. However, they can be quite bitey and nippy.
Good luck, I hope I helped xxx

I personally only give mine a thorough clean mine once every 2 weeks, i know people say every week, but i only have one in there and i just change the bedding and the corners once a week, and fresh food and water regularly, i dont bother completely changing the sawdust or cleaning all the toys every week because honestly i used to and when i did it still smelt fresh.
> what kind of stuff do they like to do? Ive never had a syrian hamster, but i think theyre just a lot smaller, same sort of temperment. One thing i will say is they do sleep during the day, so the only time i get mine out is at night while im watching the TV and can have the light off while he runs around. They wont like it if you try to hold them and pet them with the lights on, you’ll see them trying to find a shaded area.
Hope this helps
p.s. If you want more than 1 get girls, i got 2 boys and although they got on fine because they grew up together, when 1 died i couldnt put another one in because the one i had left would have fought with him.
> in what ways are they different from syrian hamsters? They are very different. Dwarfs are prone to diabetes, so no sugar outside of their staple diet whatsoever. They tend to be more bitey, and must be handled daily to keep them handleable. Syrians – Once tamed, always tamed. Less likely to bite, and don’t need as much room (not as active as dwarfs.) Can tolerate a little more sugar than dwarfs. Dwarfs can usually be housed in pairs and groups, while Syrians MUST be housed alone.
