Chinchillas - Small Pet Supplies

Chinchillas?

do chinchillas work well with other animals and are they good pets 2 have i was wondering does anyone know?

Chinchillas get along with other [small] animals well, given that the other animals get along with them. Still, I found that my chinchilla liked to "mess" with my guinea pigs once in a while. The guinea pig was never harmed of coarse. They just blew it off like nothing happened.
No matter how much your cat or dog seems to like the chinchilla and no matter how calm and friendly they act around it, DO NOT leave a chinchilla around a larger pet. This can and will end in a disaster.

As far as being a good pet to own, they are. But you HAVE to keep up with their care.
-Your house needs to be cooler than 80 degrees, as chinchillas cannot cope with hot temperatures.
-They must receive dust bathes often to keep their coat in top condition. Failing to give them these dust bathes makes an unhappy chinchilla and unhealthy fur.
-Chinchillas are "hyper-active". No matter how big your cage is, it is good to let them run around in an enclosed area (preferably a blocked off hall where there are not many obstacles). Some people let their’s roam the house for a little bit, but I found that this is a bad (very bad) idea. Chinchillas are little stunt devils and Houdinis. They can jump higher than you think and get into holes that look impossible to go through. If you are going to let yours run around the house watch it at all times.
-Some chinchillas (not all) will get aggressive when cornered. And their bites hurt... pretty bad depending on the case. But they will not bite without cause.

Hope it helps. They make excellent pets for people who know them. Most small animals are easy to care for, but this is not a pet I would just jump into getting. Do some research.

Pet limits vary wildly in St. Charles County

As St. Charles County's humane population has grown, so has the need to regulate pets in the homes of the county's residents.

There are monumental differences in pet regulations imposed by various local governments. Some admit kinds of animals others don't. For example, you can keep a pot-bellied pig in unincorporated St. Charles County and St. Peters but not in St. Charles. You can keep chickens in St. Charles but not in St. Peters.

Earlier this year, 13-year-old Beat it Anderson of St. Peters lobbied that city's Board of Aldermen to assign him to raise chickens for his 4-H project. Despite support from his neighbors, the board voted 7-1 against allowing Anderson, or any other St. Peters staying, to raise chickens.

"All of the people I talked to that had an ordinance allowing chickens said they hated it," Alderwoman Judy Bateman said during that convergence in May. "Professional Realtors think it's a bad idea because it hurts acreage values."

In St. Charles, the City Council is considering citizen Kerrie Meyers' request to change an ordinance that doesn't own swine to be kept as a domestic pet. A bill to allow one Juliani pig, weighing no more than 50 pounds, per household was introduced Sept. 6 and could be voted on when the caucus meets on Sept. 20.

Chinchillas

Chinchillas have the finest fur of all the mammals which makes them very soft. They are very clean with no noticeable odor and their dense fur keeps lice, fleas and other parasites from taking up residence!

They make good pets and are very lively. Keeko loves to go outside in the long grass (on a leash) to jump and play. Pippin is actually Keeko's father! Pippin likes to be left alone more than Keeko, probably because he was in a breeding situation for several years.

The average lifespan of a Chinchilla is 8 - 10 years, though in captivity they have been known to live up to 20 years.

The Chinchilla was named after the South American Chinca Indians .by the Spaniards in the 1500's. There are about 6 species in the Chinchillidae family and all are found only in South America. Originally they came from the Andes mountains in Peru, Chile and Bolivia. Presently, they can only be found in the mountains of Bolivia.      The Chinchillas seen today are the descendents of 11 little critters brought into California by Mathius F. Chapman in 1923 to be bred for their fur. All species have dense beautiful fur. The importance of the Chinchillas in the fur trade led to intense harvesting and today they are a relatively endangered as a wild species, though there are over 3,000 Chinchilla ranches in the United States raising the domestic species.     Chinchillas are adorable animals with long ears, large eyes and bushy tails; they are also rodents.Their tail looks like a squirrels' tail and accounts for about one third of their length. The chinchillas' body is 22.5 - 38 cm (8 3/4 - 15 in) long. The tail is 7.5 - 15 cm (3 - 6 in) long. They can weigh anywhere from 18 to 35 ounces.      An indoor enclosure makes a perfect chinchilla home. In the wild where the ground is suitable, they dig burrows, but otherwise they shelter under rocks. The cage needs to be large enough for your pet to stand up on...
