I got my 2 dwarf hamsters 2 weeks ago sunday and I need to know how and when to start petting them so that when I do they don't bite me. They might be teething because they bite everything that I put it there. It's a struggle in the morning to get their food bowl out and back in their cage in the morning.
Please help me I <3 them sooo much!!!!!!!! :-O <-- worried

If you have more than one dwarf hamster they can often start to fight for no apparent reason but there are ways to limit the chance of that, if the cage has the same amount of toys, houses and food bowls and water bottles as the amount of hamsters eg three hamsters need three wheels etc, also a cage with no tubes or extra levels is best as they can become territorial and try to stake a claim to the tubes or particular levels which can lead to fights, also avoid barred floors as they can injure their feet. Unlike rats hamsters are ok on shavings and the bedding I use if torn up tissue paper, avoid the cotton wool like bedding as that can cause injury. Im not an expert but as far as I know you have just as much chance of keeping either sex together, I have 3 female Campbells dwarfs (mum and two daughters) together, I rescued mum then she gave birth unexpectedly a week later so they have always lived together but I still have spare cages waiting in case they ever start to fight so it might be a good idea to get a spare cage just in case. Youre not being a pest at all, I dont know what I would do without forums to ask all my pet questions on.
