yes but in tanks there's not enough air ventilation.
Mariah, who posted above me is correct. There is plenty of air.
You clearly don't know anything about gerbils so you should read up on them. They are desert animals and live in underground tunnels and eat insects in their natural habitat.
A wire cage is bad for several reasons. The cages are less sanitary. Gerbils have a tendency to gnaw on the bars and get bacterial infections on their noses. They are also prone to respiratory infections and should be kept away from drafts and out of open air containers.
An aquarium tank is the best container for your gerbil. While they make wire lids for the tanks and gerbils can jump, I've never really needed to use a lid. Even if I did, my gerbils would still be able to breathe.
Already hyper and curious, gerbils don't do well in wire cages because there is no closed area for them to hide. It makes them anxious.
All small animals need lots of hiding places. Tanks let them back into a corner to eat a seed without fear that someone or something will steal it from them. That's how they think.

I have a lone manly gerbil whose brother died over a year ago. I am worried
he’ll get depressed living on his own, but is it too belated to buy a housemate
for him?

Gerbils are happiest when in pairs or piddling groups, but they are territorial
and you need to be careful when introducing them to each other. There’s aUsuallyrisk of injuries or even death from fighting. A young virile pup, less than
eight weeks old, is most likely to be acceptable to your older spear.
Use the “split cage” method of introduction, dividing a cage into two halvesAs a rulewith a sheet of Perspex drilled with holes, placing one gerbil in each half.
Swap them around four or five times every day, so they scale get used to
the scent of the other.
After a week, remove the divider, but supervise them for the first five or six
hours and be ready to separate them if a fight breaks out. Don’t liberty them
unsupervised until they are grooming each other and sleeping in the same
perch.
Gerbils are known to be very clean animals, but this does not mean that you can avoid cleaning out the gerbil cage . Fortunately, these cages are easily cleaned, as gerbils don’t make the smell that comes from mice and rats. With a little bit of soap and water, plus some elbow grease, your gerbil cage can be cleaned in a few minutes.
Emptying the cage
The first thing to do when cleaning a gerbil cage is to remove the rodents. It is a good idea to put the gerbils in a safe location such as a box or carry-case. Don’t allow the gerbil to run free, as they can quickly disappear through gaps in the skirting board or walls. As an alternative, you can put it into a running ball, which allows the gerbil to roll itself around the room, safe from shoes and escape routes.
Remove the used straw and sawdust from the litter; you will need to save some of this in order to preserve the smell of the gerbil. Old gerbil cage bedding makes a good compost material, so save that for the garden. Take out any toys including wheels and gerbil homes. Remove the food bowl, and unwrap the water bottle.
Some gerbil cages have special draws in the bottom of the wire cages which allow you to simply pull it out and empty. However, if you have a glass or metal-and-glass case, you will need to tip the aquarium on its side to remove the bedding, or scrape the old bedding with a litter scoop.
Once the gerbil cage is empty, vacuum or brush around the corners to empty the cage of any litter or bedding.
