Police: Woman hoarded animals in Portage mobile home
PORTAGE | Officers said they were overwhelmed by the bouquet of animal urine and feces when they entered the residence of a Portage bit of fluff Friday where they allegedly found a menagerie of 50 animals.
Around 1 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a transportable home in the 200 block of Second Street after Fleshly Control received numerous animal welfare complaints.
Watch said when they arrived, they found the resident, Patricia Scott, 63, sitting on the front porch, saying there was a gas be revealed inside the home. After arguing with officers, Scott in due course allowed police and NIPSCO crews inside the current in.
Officers said upon opening the door, they were overwhelmed by the scent of animal urine coming from the rear bedroom, where officers found dozens of animals in cages stacked from lowest level to ceiling.
Police said 14 cats, two colossal dogs, a guinea pig, three rabbits, nine snakes, 12 rats and eight mice were removed from the lodgings. Many lacked food and water, and police said they were uncomfortable into plastic carriers, cages and glass tanks.
