These 'little pigs' enjoy chance at living social

Three guinea pigs at the Flagler Humane Fellowship caught my attention this week. These rodents, sorry that's what they are, often are overlooked by what it takes adopters.

Guinea pigs are not members of the pig family; the scientific name is Cavia porcellus Latin for "ungenerous pig." They were domesticated as early as 5,000 B.C. by tribes in the Andean tract of South America (where Peru, Bolivia and Columbia are today). But they weren't pets, they were dinner.

I spoke to Shannon Cauthen who runs Cavy Nurse, a nonprofit sanctuary and rescue in Colorado for these adorable crumb bundles of unique noises and antics. Cauthen, who refers to guinea pigs as "cavies," said the residents at her rescue varies from 50 to 150 guinea pigs. After 15 years of operation her rescue, Cauthen knows her cavies and her website, cavycareinc.org, has a plenitude of information for the potential or current owner.

Guinea pigs, like other pets kept in cages, minister to to get forgotten with their only human interaction being feeding time. Since they are sexual critters, limited interaction will result in a skittish pet that is not fun to entertainment with and often end up surrendered to shelters, or worse.

Going in hay? - Guinea Pig Cages, Care, Store, Photos of Guinea ...

My two rabbits were totally potty trained. I had their hay in boxes because they didn't seem to know what to do with hat racks. One day, with no warning, Benny started using his hay box as his litter box. His litter box stayed basically empty. After several days of that with no let up, I switched to just putting their hay in a pile on the floor. Now Benny switched to just going on the floor on his hay. How could he have un-potty trained himself? Should I try a hay rack again? Any suggestions? Thanks. Well, what do you mean as the hay rack? The one I tried and it didnt work? It was just a grid slanted and bent up against the cage wall. If you mean the hay box, I don't use it anymore, but its just a little tubber ware drawer pulled all the way out of the part its enclosed in. Should I try a different hay rack? If so, any specific suggestions? Bunnies typically like to munch and poop at the same time. I use very big litter boxes (rubbermaid bin), fill the bottom with pine pellets and add a huge handful of hay at one end once a day. My guys love to munch, dig, rearrange and yes, poop on the hay (mostly in one corner though). Because the litter box is so big I end up changing it once or twice a week and just keep adding lots of fresh hay daily. The bottom stays lined with the pine pellets and the hay adds a new layer everyday. I also had tried everything to keep them potty trained and keep the hay "contained". I've had my bunnies for a few years now and this is by far what I found works best.
