Conservationists win sage grouse ruling

Conservationists win commonsensical grouse ruling

Western Watersheds also sues to defend pygmy rabbits

A Hailey-based environmental group has won one battle to keep safe a species of concern only to begin fighting another.

The Western Watersheds Draw up won a court order overturning the Bureau of Land Directorate's Resource Management Plans for the Craters of the Moon Governmental Monument in southeast Idaho.

Idaho District Estimate B. Lynn Winmill ruled Wednesday that the BLM failed to chew over negative impacts of grazing and oil and gas development on public lands.

The ruling could put the squeeze on someone the BLM to redo all management plans for lands within Craters of the Moon, as well as the Pinedale Green Office in western Wyoming.

The main concern, according to Western Watersheds Chief executive officer Director John Marvel, is that the proposed plans would have awfully damaged sage grouse habitat.

"The Chiffonier of Land Management's own scientists state that grazing as unimaginative is pushing sage grouse to the brink of extinction," Wonder said in a news release. "We believe this decidedness will finally require the BLM to curtail or reduce all negative one impacts threatening sage grouse habitats across the West."

Grassland Guardians : Journal Watch Online

When prairie dogs disappear, invasive shrubs move in

Grasslands in northwestern Mexico that harbor endangered species are quickly being invaded by shrubs, thanks to a dramatic drop in the density of prairie dogs.

Mexico’s Janos grasslands have been hit by intensive agriculture, over-grazing, and droughts in recent years. The area inhabited by prairie dogs fell by 73% from 1988-2005, and their density dropped from 25 to 2 animals per hectare over roughly the same time period, researchers report in .

Since prairie dogs help maintain grasslands by clipping and eating the seeds of invasive shrubs, their downturn has allowed shrubland to expand, the team says. As a result, species that rely on grassland habitat, such as horned larks and cottontail rabbits, also saw declines between 1994-2004.

To bring the grasslands back, the researchers are turning to some unconventional allies: the agricultural and cattle industries. Grazing cattle could help clear the land so prairie dogs can move back in, the team says. And short-term intensive farming could remove invasive shrubbery – a task too costly to be completed by conservationists – allowing the area to be later restored to grassland.
